Segal wins backing of SEIU, District 1199NE
Service Employees International Union, District 1199, the New England Healthcare Employees Union, presented its endorsement this afternoon to First Congressional District candidate David Segal. The local represents about 4000 workers in Rhode Island.
Here’s part of what executive vice president Stan Israel told Segal in presenting the endorsement:
You’re almost an honorary member of the union, anyway — all the issues that you’ve fought with us and for us. We have a great appreciation of the hard work that you’ve done for our organization and for other workers throughout the state, and for your constituents over the years. You’ve been wonderful on every issue that’s important to us, important to working families as well, on taxes, jobs . . . . healthcare, helping us fight for our pensions and all kinds of issues.
The backing of unions like SEIU and the AFT is part of Segal’s grassroots battle against better-funded rivals, most notably Providence mayor David Cicilline.
In other endorsement news, Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts has won the backing of United Nurses and Allied Professionals, which represents more than 500 workers.
Good stuff.
Just hope that state Rep. Segal can know how to use this endorsement.
His campaign comes off as spirted, but not professional.
The fact that he has little to no on-the-ground experience with unions but is willing to make promises goes a long way. I like where his head is at but he is lacking the wherewithal to really get a serious campaign together or be effective in Washington. I look forward to seeing more from him in the future as gains the valuable learning experience of running a campaign.
