Jack Reed endorses Costantino for mayor

September 11, 2010

US Senator Jack Reed – whose soft-spoken approach has led to his being called the E.F. Hutton of his chamber – hasn’t been known for making endorsements in sharply contested primaries. But Reed emerged as a headline fundraiser last month for Michael A. Tarro, one of three Democrats running for the state rep held by Steven Costantino. And now following whispers that this was about to happen, Rhode Island’s best-liked elected official is today lending his imprimatur to Costantino’s mayoral campaign.

Dear Voter:

I am writing to you today to ask for you to join me in support of Steven Costantino who is running for Mayor of Providence. I have had the pleasure of working with Steven on many issues and I am impressed with his leadership and fiscal skills.

One issue in particular stands out to me. As Chairman of the RI House Finance Committe, Steven successfully obtained funding to close the “Donut Hole”, a gap in Medicare benefits that directly affected RI’s senior citizens. His ingenuity and leadership were directly responsible for securing this funding so necessary to our state’s seniors.

I am also impressed with Steven’s leadership in passing an historic school funding formula which will bring an additional $30 million to Providence’s schools. It is this kind of fiscal knowledge and ability which will help Providence taxpayers and insure the quality education our children deserve.
I ask you to support Steven Costantino on September 14th as his experience and leadership are vital to Providence’s future.

Sincerely yours,
Jack Reed
US Senator
Rhode Island

Bizarre. While I will stil support Reed, I don’t know why he did this. Perhaps he really is giving up on re-election, assuming he will be the next Sec of Defense.
