The cost of running against Senator Sheldon Whitehouse next year is generally placed in the $5 million ballpark. That’s low by national standards, but still quite a bit of change, so Republican Barry Hinckley is getting in motion with a trio of California events this week.
On Wednesday, Russ Hanlin, Erinn Lynch, Louise Carroll, and Terry Clougherty are hosting a Pasadena reception for Hinckley. A day later, on Thursday, the Saint Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco will be the scene of a Hinckley reception hosted by Butch Haze and Tom Lynch.
Finally, on Friday, a reception to introduce Hinckley will be held at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach. The hosts are Robert Cristiano and Cammy Leslie.
Invites for the events don’t suggest a minimum donation, but do indicate that contributions are welcome.
Hinckley is the president and co-founder of Bullhorn, a software company. If former governor Don Carcieri or former State Police superintendent Brendan Doherty jump into the Senate race, presumably creating a GOP primary, look for Hinckley to tout himself as the fiscal conserative-social moderate candidate.

This could get interesting if Hinckley can raise some money. You know the conservatives are going to try to shove him out of the race to clear the path for Carcieri or Doherty. A nice bankroll will make it that much harder, and a contested primary that much more likely.
