Sheldon Whitehouse on Bruce Sundlun
US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s association with former governor Bruce Sundlun started as a campaign aide on Sundlun’s first gubernatorial run, in 1986. After Sundlun’s eventual election, on his third run in 1990, Whitehouse served as legal counsel, policy director, and director of business regulation. This recollection by Whitehouse seems as good a summary as any of Sundlun:
In a world in which there’s an awful lot of timidity in politics and people who creep cautiously around, always testing the winds, he was the exact opposite. He would charge in the direction that he thought was right, and I think that came as a surprise to a lot people in politics.
Sundlun, Whitehouse says, was “always eager to do the next thing.”
