Coming attractions from Brendan Doherty
A recently emailed fundraising pitch from Republican Brendan Doherty shows the tack he’ll be increasingly using in his campaign against Democratic Congressman David Cicilline. My emphasis is in bold.
It is now time to hold David Cicilline accountable — not only for the financial mess he left in Providence and his ensuing cover-up, but also for his role in the enormous waste of federal tax-payer dollars by the federal government during his first term in Congress.
Rhode Island doesn’t need a mouthpiece for the out-of-touch, liberal special interests. Rhode Island families want and need good paying jobs and Rhode Islanders deserve someone who will be focused on getting our economy back on track. David Cicilline is not fit for the task of cleaning up Washington and instead perpetuates the non-stop partisan bickering that causes gridlock and prevents achieving real solutions. I will work for Rhode Islanders and I will make our State and our nation my top priority, ahead of any party or ideology.

On Politics has moved!
Attacking “wild spending,” will be loved by Republicans (whose votes Dougherty will get anyway, and maybe some Independents, but if that’s where the emphasis goes he will be playing right into the likely encumbent’s game plan. Not the best way to go.
Prof. Profughi,
While the conventional dynamic has to be taken into consideration, isn’t it also true that Congressman Cicilline is not going to have quite the same leeway to use a message of “I’ll spend, and I don’t care where the money comes from” that the usual Democrat has?
