In big shift, Senator Jack Reed supports same-sex marriage

May 9, 2012

Senator Jack Reed started tweeting a few weeks ago, and the of-the-moment social media is where he announced his of-the-moment support at about 6:30 pm, following a similar annoucement earlier today by President Obama, for same-sex marriage.

Same-sex marriage supporters have campaigned for months, encouraging Reed to move away from his previous support of the Defense of Marriage Act. Reed was clearly on his own timetable, and you can’t ask for better political cover than following in the shadow of the president.

In a statement, Reed said:

“After careful consideration, particularly the compelling Constitutional analysis of the 9th Circuit case, I believe it is appropriate to support same sex marriage.

I support marriage equality. Is it the right thing to do, and we need to move forward.

I believe every American citizen deserves the freedom to choose their own life partner and committed couples deserve equal protection under the law.”

Reed say he plans to co-sponsor the Respect for Marriage Act.

No surprise. Jack Reed is not a stand up guy nor is he a leader in any way.
Reed is a very small man in more ways than one and showed his true colors by hiding in Obama’s shadow on the issue of same-sex marriage.
