Another reminder of how much the ProJo has changed

June 30, 2010

As the Providence Journal strives to reinvent itself in an ongoing period of decline for print, the editorial today calling on the General Assembly to get a casino question on the November ballot is another reminder of how much the statewide daily has changed.

We support the referendum and hope that the legislature reconvenes to either override the governor’s veto or fill in some of the blanks left in the original legislation. Leaders should immediately start working with the governor on a plan.

This kind of talk would have been unthinkable in the not-too-distant days when the ProJo was a staunch opponent of casino gambling. But the big change came when the paper endorsed the Harrah’s Entertainment-Narragansett Indian casino plan that was later shot down by voters in 2006.
