Chafee appoints Coit new DEM director

Janet L. Coit of Barrington, an environmental lawyer and former staffer for Sen. John Chafee, has been selected by Governor-elect Chafee as the new director of environmental management. Coit is currently RI director of the Nature Conservancy, an environmental advocacy group.

She worked as a staffer for then-Sen. John Chafee and was counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works when the senior Chafee was committee chairman. Coit also worked for Lincoln Chafee when he was in the U.S. Senate.

She is a graduate of Dartmouth and Stanford University Law School. Coit is married and  has two children.

DEM is a sprawling agency that is responsible for state environmental policy and regulation and managing over 65,000 acres of parks, forests, wildlife management areas, boat ramps, fishing access areas and state beaches. DEM is also in charge of preserving and protecting water and air quality in Rhode Island.
