Gio likes Ken McKay for next GOP chair

December 10, 2010

Outgoing state Republican Party chairman Giovanni Cicione says he’s encouraged Ken McKay to succeed him as GOP chief.

Is McKay interested? “I don’t know the answer to that,” Cicione says. “I have the same question.”

Cicione says McKay expressed neither interest or disinterest in response to the suggestion that he take on the role of growing the state GOP.

McKay is a former chief of staff for Governor Carcieri who later took a job as chief of staff for the Republican National Committee. Some observers thought McKay was a scapegoat for an RNC embarassment involving an adult-themed nightclub.

McKay couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

In related news, Cicione says Erik Wallin, this year’s GOP candidate for attorney general, will not pursue the Republican chairmanship.

Cicione says he’s not currently aware of any active candidates for the GOP chairmanship other than Patrick Sweeney.
