Reed, Whitehouse back Obama-GOP tax compromise

Rhode Island two Democratic U.S. senators – Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse  – both supported President Obama’s tax package in a procedural vote today. The legislation, the result of a compromise between Obama and Republican Senate leaders, would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy as well as continuing middle-class tax cuts and an extension of unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed.

In a statement, Whitehouse said that “while I oppose some elements of the compromise package,’’ including the tax breaks for the wealthy and the reduced estate tax, “I believe that on balance it is a win for middle-class families.’’
