Rep. Peter Petrarca charged in shooting near Providence nightclub

State Rep. Peter Petrarca, D-Lincoln, has been charged with illegally firing a gun outside his Providence nightclub.

Petrarca, 36, who is vice-chairman of the House Corporations Committee, was taken into custody at Club Karma shortly after midnight on Saturday, according to Providence police. Police say officers heard a shot outside the club, which is near the intersection of Richmond and Friendship streets. When police arrived, Petrarca told them he fired the gun and police saw gun coming from his coat pocket.

No one was hurt in the shooting.

Petrarca, a lawyer, did not return a phone message seeking comment. The club is the former Club Elements, which had its liquor license lifted after disturbances there, including a New Year’s Eve shooting. Petrarca and a partner reopened the club under the new name after agreeing to provide more security. The gun Petrarca fired was a Smith & Wesson 38, according to police..

A spokesman for House Speaker Gordon Fox said Fox had no comment on the incident.
