John J.R. Pagliarini cleared of unemployment benefit flap

January 27, 2011

J.R. Pagliarini, who is now Mayor Angel Taveras’ chief of staff, has been cleared by the state Department of Labor and Training of campaign-season charges that he was drawing state unemployment benefits while he was on Lincoln Chafee’s campaign staff.

The dust-up led Pagliarini to leave the Chafee campaign in October, just weeks before the election won by Chafee. In a letter released today by Pagliarini, The DLT concluded after an investigation, that due a “clerical error’’ Pagliarini was placed on Chafee’s campaign payroll when he actually wasn’t collecting a paycheck.

There was never much to the allegations, which were probably fanned by the campaign of Democrat Frank Caprio. Pagliarini is a veteran political operative who isn’t careless enough to put himself in a compromising position for a few hundred dollars. The flap was originally reported by WJAR Channel 10.

I wonder if Cianci and WPRO will issue apologies and retractions. Cianci has repeated, over and over again, the false and defamatory charge that Mr. Pagliariini “got caught” “double-dipping”.

Do you think something like the “facts” would sway Cianci. Even though the truth is out, the man with no stains on his jacket was on the radio yesterday afternoon implying that he is positive that the Chaffee Administration and the RI State Police are engaged in some kind of coverup.
