RI Bar Association latest to back same-sex marriage

March 25, 2011

The Rhode Island Bar Association is the latest group to this week back same-sex marriage legislation:

In their announcement of the vote, Bar Association President Lise M. Iwon stated, “No one should try to instruct a religious organization who it may marry. However, as lawyers, we view the issue of secular marriage equality through the lens of civil and not ecclesiastical law. It is a legal, not a moral, issue. Rhode Island is a democratic state with control over civil marriage and authority over related civil rights.”

“The Rhode Island Bar Association’s support of marriage equality is further proof that efforts to extend the full protections and privileges of marriage to all Rhode Islanders is a simple matter of access to justice,” said Martha Holt, MERI board member.  “I want to thank the Bar Association’s House of Delegates for lending their depth of knowledge and legal expertise to such an important matter.”

Iwon testified in favor of the same-sex marriage bill during a recent House Judiciary Committee hearing.

This comes after similar moves this week by the RI AFL-CIO and the Newport Democratic City Committee. Same-sex marriage opponents have not publicly reacted to the flurry of endorsements.
