Jack Nicholson to get Brown degree

April 28, 2011

Actor Jack Nicholson, Huffington Post creator Arianna Huffington and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof will receive honorary degrees at Brown University’s commencement on Memorial Day weekend. Other honorary degree recipients include: Lisa Randall, cosmologist and particle physicist, Zhenkai Zhao, poet and dissident, David Scott, astronaut and test pilot, Kenneth Roth, a 1977 Brown grad and director of Human Rights Watch, Lynn Ida Nottage, a 1986 Brown grad and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, David Mumford, professor emeritus of math at Brown and winner of the 2011 National Medal of Science and Katie King Crowley, a 1997 Brown grad and three-time Olympic medalist in women’s hockey.

Following Brown tradition, none of the honorary degree recipients will speak at the commencement ceremony, which is held on the College Green. That honor has long been reserved for two members of the graduating class.

Nicholson is a three-time Academy Award winner, but he is also one of the nation’s most noted L.A. Lakers fans, which is not such a good thing at this time of the year in Boston Celtics-centric Rhode Island. Longtime Celts fans will never forget the incident during the heated Celtics-Lakers rivalry in the 1980s, when Jack `mooned’ the crowd at Boston Garden during a playoff game.
