Simmons gives three Brown varsity sports life

April 29, 2011

Brown President Ruth Simmons announced today that the university’s effort to save money by eliminating varsity wrestling, fencing and skiing has been put on hold.

Simmons said in a letter to the Brown community that the recommendation of a campus Athletics Review Committee issued April 21 that called for ending the sports at Brown will not be put into effect this year.

The action means that those three sports are safe for at least another year, Simmons said.

She said that the time frame “for consideration and implementation of the discontinuance of specific sports is too brief.’’

Simmons said she will delay any decision on the sports until Brown Corporation considers the issue in the fall at the earliest.

Governor Lincoln Chafee, a Brown graduate who was captain of the wrestling team at Brown during his undergraduate years in the 1970s, protested the recommendation to end his favorite sport.
