Pension Study Panel Not Diverse

June 30, 2011

The pension study commission put together by Governor Lincoln Chafee and General Treasurer Gina Raimondo boasts distinguished members from government, business, academia and labor. But it can hardly be called a diverse group that mirrors 21st Century Rhode Island.

This looks like another one of those Rhode Island No Girls Need Apply deals!

Just one of the dozen members is female –Alicia Munnell, a former assistant secretary of the treasury in the Bill Clinton administration. And there is only one minority —  Cranston Mayor Alan Fung, a Republican. This from Mary Ann Sorrentino, the former head of Planned Parenthood and a onetime popular talk show host, and former State Rep. Elizabeth Morancy, a Providence Democrat.

“Note to the General Treasurer: Ms. Raimondo, we may not all be CPA’s but most women know more about balancing a budget and cutting unneeded fat from the equation than most of these men will ever know. And we don’t owe anybody anything since they never gave us a hell of a lot in the first place, ’’ writes Sorrentino.

There may be seven Harvard University degrees among the pension panel’s members, but it is woefully shy of minority and women members.

That was my first thought looking at the pic in Projo — oh, another panel of white men! How come no one ever calls on smart lady bloggers and clinical social workers to be on panels? …then again, do I need one more volunteer position requiring tons of labor and emotional anguish? I probably shouldn’t tempt fate on that one!
