Chafee to name members of I-195 commission Tuesday

August 22, 2011

Governor Lincoln Chafee is set tomorrow afternoon to name the members of the commission that will oversee the economically vital redevelopment of the land made available by the relocation of Interstate 195.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and House Speaker Gordon Fox recently offered their respective suggestions for the panel, with John Kelly winding up on both lists.

While the optimization of the I-195 land is part of a significant challenge for RI’s elites, as Ted Nesi recently wrote, Providence is faring a lot better in the process than it appeared at first blush. That’s because with input from Taveras (three picks) and Fox (one pick), the seven-member I-195 panel will have an effective majority of Providence representatives.

Majority of Representatives chosen by Providence politicians, but do all the nominees actually live in Providence? Not saying that has to be a prerequisite, but we may not have majority representation of people from Providence.

Of all the names listed, recommended, already on I-195 committees, there’s not one that I recognize from when the “Jewelry District” was not the “Jewelry District”; but, rather No Man’s Land in the late 70’s, when that entire area began to roll over from industrial/light manufacturing, to studio/residential (a new zoning category) that, then, began to popularize and populated that area of the city of Providence that was dying.

Where is just one person from this immediately adjacent community that has the knowledge of history that’s lacking from all others presently recommended?
