Vermont Governor’s Daughter Transfers to Brown
Brown University has a new student this fall – Olivia Shumlin, daughter of Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin. Olivia accompanied her dad on a trip to Rhode Island during the last legislative session, when he came to the state to bolster Governor Chafee’s campaign to win approval of gay marriage.
Vermont was the nation’s first state to approve gay civil unions in 2000 and went to full same-sex marriage in 2009. Peter Shumlin was a state senator at that time and was a key proponent of marriage equality.
Olivia Shumlin, a graduate of Putney School, started her college career at Smith College, but transferred to Brown at the beginning of the current semester. She is now a Brown sophomore.
Democrat Shumlin and Chafee, an independent, have become allies. Both were elected in 2010 in close elections and the two recently visited Canadian hydroelectric facilities together.
