State Democratic Party calls on Gordon to step down

September 20, 2011

State Democratic Chairman Ed Pacheco has joined House Speaker Gordon Fox and Portsmouth Republicans in calling on Representative Dan Gordon to resign.

“I have been troubled by Representative Gordon’s behavior just this year. His mishandling of the Gay-Straight Alliance at Tiverton High School including the very public, disrespectful remarks to a Tiverton High student was worrisome. His conduct has distressed his colleagues to the degree of expulsion –the precise reason for which has been alluded to, but remains unclear.

“Now that Mr. Gordon’s lengthy history with Massachusetts law enforcement has come to light, his presence in the Rhode Island House of Representatives has become an unwelcome distraction. His disturbing, criminally violent past casts a shadow on the House and serves as an embarrassment to the Chamber and his district.

“Mr. Gordon should resign his seat to best serve his constituents of District 71 and to avoid further disruption.”

Gordon said earlier today he will stand for reelection next year.
