Primary for Smithfield Senate Seat held by Tassoni?

September 30, 2011

It looks like there may be a Democratic primary for the state Senate seat currently held by Democrat John J. Tassoni Jr, of Smithfield. Tassoni has announced that he won’t seek another term in 2012.

Former Smithfield Town Council President Stephen R. Archambault, who lost a 2010 attorney general primary race to Peter Kilmartin of Pawtucket, has announced he will run for the District 22 Senate seat being vacated by Tassoni.

Now, William J. Hawkins III has said he is thinking of entering the state Senate primary. Hawkins once worked at the State House an as aide to former House Speaker Joseph DeAngelis and is a former assistant commissioner of the state Coastal Resources Management Council.  Hawkins also is a former chairman of the Smithfield Democratic Town Committee. The 49-year old Hawkins says he will make his decision early in 2012.  Hawkins’ uncle is John Hawkins, the former state Senate majority leader and head of the RI Lottery Commission.
