Newberry sees pension tweaks as unlikely once plan emerges
With state Treasurer Gina Raimondo and Governor Lincoln Chafee set to unveil their pension overhaul plan early next week, the big question is: what happens next? In particular, will public-employee unions be able to influence lawmakers to change aspects of the overhaul they deem objectionable?
For his part, House Minority Leader Brian Newberry thinks the answer to the second question is “No.”
I think that whatever proposal comes out, it will be very difficult for either chamber to make changes. I think any changes of something this complex are going to have to have some acturial support behind it, and I suspect it will be difficult to do it [if the proposal comes up for a legislative change]
