RI GOP Senate leaders endorse Doherty

November 8, 2011

In a contrast to the city and town (and House) endorsements received by John Loughlin, rival Republican Brendan Doherty has won the backing of two GOP state Senate leaders:

The Republican Leadership of the Rhode Island State Senate today endorsed Brendan Doherty for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island ‘s First Congressional District.  Senate Minority Leader, Dennis Algiere (R-38) and Senate Minority Whip, David Bates (R-32) have thrown their support behind Doherty’s election to Congress in 2012.  Both Senator Algiere of Westerly and Senator Bates of Barrington were first elected to the RI State Senate in 1992 and each served previously on his respective Town Council.

“I am very grateful to have the endorsements of Senator Algiere and Senator Bates,” stated Doherty.  “Both Senators are dedicated public servants and leaders within their respective communities and within the Rhode Island Republican Party.  I have great respect for their work on behalf of Rhode Island and I am extremely grateful for their support in my campaign for Congress,” concluded Doherty.

Things should get more interesting with Loughlin’s expected return from Iraq next month.
