Dave Gavitt Way
Providence is about to name a street after Rhode Island’s Mr. Basketball, the late Dave Gavitt. A Dartmouth graduate, Gavitt coached the 1973 Providence College team to the NCAA tournament’s Final Four. He was the father of the Big East basketball conference and served as the league’s first commissioner. He was head of basketball operations for the Boston Celtics and is enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. He died earlier this year.
A ceremony will be held Jan. 4th to rename Service Road8/Westminster Street Bridge as Dave Gavitt Way. Mayor Angel Taveras, Governor Lincoln Chafee, Big East Commissioner John Marinatto , members of the Providence City Council and PC President Rev. Brian Shanley, O.P. will attend the ceremonies.
