For some in Rhode Island, New Year’s is a day at the beach
Some Rhode Islanders welcomed 2012 by taking part in various plunges around the state. Here’s a scene from the 6th annual Penguin Plunge at Misquamicut Beach in Westerly. Sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures took some of the sting from racing into the Atlantic, but most of the participants quickly stormed back out.
More than 100 people participated, and more than $12,000 was raised for the Westerly Area Rest Meals shelter for the homeless.
