Taveras hires Michael Raia as his new communications director
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras has hired Michael Raia, currently director of communications and media relations for the Maryland Department of Labor, as his new communications director, RIPR has learned.
Raia formerly served as press secretary for Maryland’s lieutenant governor, Anthony G. Brown. As a Providence College grad, Raia is no stranger to Rhode Island; he once interned for Charles Fogarty during Fogarty’s two terms as lieutenant governor.
Raia will take over a position that has been vacant since Melissa Withers left for a different opportunity last summer. Besides his PC degree, Raia earned a master’s from George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management in DC.
Raia’s wife, Kristin, is a fellow PC grad. Raia is due to start on the job later this month.
