Providence planning director Deller out as RIPTA’s chairman

January 20, 2012

Thomas Deller, director of the Providence Department of Planning & Development, has resigned as chairman of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, according to this agenda for RIPTA’s meeting on Monday.

Deller couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The Chafee administration has been looking in recent months at trying to improve the transit agency and its operation.

RIPTA announced its most recent layoffs in December. In August, riders protested proposed cuts in service.

The transit agency has battled serious budget issues, as it noted in a news release in December:

RIPTA’s approved Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2011 was $100.3 million. Currently, RIPTA faces a $4.6 million budget deficit.
