AHL All-stars to play in Providence in 2013
The American Hockey League All-Star game is returning to Providence for the first time since 1995. Jim Bennett, the city’s economic development director and chairman of the RI Convention Center Authority, says the all-star contest will be the linchpin of a long hockey weekend in Providence that will bring thousands of fans and AHL executives to the capital city. The plan is for a Providence Bruins game on Friday night at the Dunk, a youth hockey tournament on Saturday, a pro skills competition on Sunday and the all-star game on Monday evening. Bennett said Mayor Angel Taveras played a crucial role in helping recruit the game to Providence.
“This will be great for the city’s hotel and restaurants in the dead of winter,’’ Bennett said. Bennett himself is a huge hockey fan and a former star player at Brown University.
