Brown U. calls talks with Taveras positive

February 15, 2012

The sit-down between Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Brown University president Ruth Simmons took place around mid-day today. Brown spokeswoman Marisa Quinn has this statement on the talks aimed at generating more in voluntary contributions from the university:

At the invitation of the Mayor and the Governor, we have been exploring a number of possibilities that would allow us to achieve our shared goals of assisting the city while also supporting Brown’s continued capacity to fulfill its mission.

The strength and success of Brown and Providence are intertwined, and the scenarios we are discussing with the Mayor seek to position Brown as a long-term partner with the city and state for the benefit of Providence, RI and Brown. Discussions are going well and we are confident that they will lead to constructive, fair and equitable outcome.

Meanwhile, Taveras is set to announce an agreement with Johnson & Wales at 3 this afternoon.

Word has it that Brown has counter-offered in the recent past to give more money than it currently does, but less money than the City of Providence says publicly that it wants. They’ll work out a compromise at some point soon I bet.
