Taveras says he would vote for Zurier “in a second”
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is vouching for Ward 2 Councilman Sam Zurier as he tries to battle back from a Providence Journal story about his chiding note to an East Side couple who didn’t contribute to his campaign.
“Obviously, Councilman Zurier made a mistake, and he admitted to it relatively quickly and apologized to his constituents and the city of Providence,” Taveras said during a taping this morning of RIPR’s Political Roundtable. “I’ve known councilman Zurier for a very, very long time, and I would vote for him in a second to be my councilman if he were running in my district.”
Taveras said Zurier “should not be judged just on this one act. If you look at the total amount of his work and his background and everything else, I think people should know he’s a top quality person.”
In related news, Taveras says he expects the city’s battle with public-safety retirees over 5 and 6 percent compounded pensions COLAs to wind up in the RI Supreme Court.
Political Roundtable can be heard during Morning Edition on Friday at 5:40 and 7:40 and online.
