Gemma expected to announce run against Cicilline as soon as this week
Multiple sources tell RIPR that Anthony Gemma, who placed second to David Cicilline in the four-way Democratic First Congressional District primary in 2010, is gearing up to announce a rematch against the freshman congressman. Gemma is expected to make his run formal as soon as this week, sources say.
Gemma did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
During the 2010 primary, Gemma wielded the sharpest rhetoric by far among the three Democrats running against Cicilline. The other two were David Segal and Bill Lynch.
Gemma has some considerable resources as a businessman and entrepreneur, so he will be able to amplify his message. A Gemma campaign will also offer some degree of distraction to Cicilline as the GOP’s Brendan Doherty has the Republican field to himself.
The big question now becomes whether a third Democrat will get into the race.
