Tensions flaring between Chafee and Raimondo well before 2014
UPDATE II: Scheduling a talk
Raimondo spokeswoman Joy Fox says their office and that of Governor Chafee are trying to reschedule a briefing on 38 Studios for Raimondo.
UPDATE: Raimondo raps Chafee anew
As part of their ongoing dispute, state Treasurer Gina Raimondo offered some not-so-thinly veiled criticism of Governor Lincoln Chafee during an appearance on WPRO this afternoon.
Raimondo, for example, says the EDC’s effort to create high-wage jobs is a good idea. As far as 38 Studios, she added, “What happened here was a failure of execution. We put too much money into one deal. We took our eye off the ball over the last 17 months. It seems like maybe it wasn’t monitored as aggressively as it should have been.”
We’re more than two years away from the next gubernatorial election, but tensions are flaring to new heights between Governor Lincoln Chafee and one of his possible Democratic rivals, state Treasurer Gina Raimondo.
Today’s Providence Journal paraphrases Raimondo in saying “her staff has called Chafee’s office several times asking for a briefing on the 38 Studios financial situation, and has not gotten one, so she does not know the extent of 38 Studios’ financial distress.”
Chafee spokeswoman Christine Hunsinger says Raimondo’s charge isn’t correct:
It is untrue that the Treasurer has not been granted a briefing. The Governor had scheduled a meeting with the Treasurer to brief her on the 38 Studios matter at which point Joy Fox notified the media and attempted to turn the meeting into a press stunt. At that point, the Governor then postponed the meeting. The Governor has placed a call to the Treasurer and she has not returned the phone call.
Fox couldn’t be reached for immediate comment. I’ll update this post when she does.
Chafee, in interviews with RIPR’s Scott MacKay and WPRO’s Buddy Cianci, has also criticized Raimondo for not supporting his efforts to overhaul municipal pensions.
