Studio 38 jobs gone; No sign of Thanks Don or Schilling

May 24, 2012

It looks like all the jobs promised by Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and Thanks Don Carcieri, the former R.I. governor who led the 38 Studios deal, have vanished. Various sources in the video game industry are reporting that all of the workers at 38 Studios in Providence have been let go.Gov. Lincoln Chafee about to hold news conference on 38 Studios status at State House in a few minutes. No sign of company major domo  Curt Schilling or Carcieri. House Speaker Gordon Fox and Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed also assuming a very low profile on this issue.

No surprise here. The business model is flawed and the crony capitalism that lead to the deal which brought 38 Studios here was based on smoke and mirrors to get the people of RI all 1 million+ (men, women and children) to pony up $50 to $112 per head for Shilling and company.

Here’s to trickle-down economics! Empower rich people to create jobs, cut their taxes, give them fat public subsidies and the jobs will come. Then they will go. Then we are left holding the big old bag.

Seriously? the geniuses at the RI statehouse bet 100% of our venture capital on one flimsy “gaming company” run by a baseball player? And we lost the money?

    You must be kidding.

Be careful what you wish for Scotso. I predict here and now that your little boy Linc will rue the day Curt Schilling starts talking about what’s gone on and not gone on over the past 17 months with the state of RI and “Chafee’s EDC”. Ouch!!

Geez Tim, I always figured you for a free-market guy, but I guess I was naive. What can you defend about a deal that put government and taxpayer money on the line for a risky business venture run by a guy with no discernible business track record? This thing was flawed from the start.

What happened with Don Carcieri and the EDC that the GA says they didn’t know what they were voting for?? Are you kidding? Now RI tax payers are on the hook for $100 million! What a gathering of fools in the General Assembly…Especially in light of so many citizens who were against giving all that money to only one business with no proven track record but a baseball star at the helm, what about all the small businesses out there who could have been helped to boost job growth and positive PR for RI…What a blunder, Carcieri and the other big business experts on the EDC should have known better…Talk radio hosts should stop insulting and blaming Gov. Chafee for not doing something sooner…Schilling spent all the 75million, how could he get that back? It’s gone!
