Raimondo says she’ll defend the pension overhaul

June 22, 2012

State Treasurer Gina Raimondo has offered the following statement in response to lawsuits filed today challenging the state’s pension overhaul:

The passage of the Rhode Island Retirement Security Act in November 2011 represented the culmination of 11 months of thoughtful, fact-based analysis and input from retirees, employees and taxpayers.  It was carefully designed by the General Assembly in an effort to save our state-administered retirement system. Treasury will work diligently to defend the important work done by the General Assembly.

Left unmentioned in the treasurer’s release is how she was in many respects the architect, top booster, and poster child of the pension overhaul.

“It was carefully designed by the General Assembly in an effort to save our state-administered retirement system.”

Really? What significant changes to the bill were made by the General Assembly? What I remember is a bill being rammed through that was specifically designed by the Treasurer herself.
