Tony Simon to manage re-election campaign for Sheldon Whitehouse

June 22, 2012

Tony Simon, deputy state director for US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, is leaving that position to run the freshman senator’s re-election campaign, RIPR has learned.

Simon was Whitehouse’s deputy campaign manager in 2006, when the Democrat beat Lincoln Chafee in a year marked by a backlash vote against Republicans and then-President George W. Bush. (Mindy Myers, who piloted Whitehouse’s 2006 run, is now helming the campaign for Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren.)

Simon has built a reputation as a smart and industrious campaign operative. A Johnston native and URI grad, he took leave of his Senate staff job to run the statewide coordinated campaign for Rhode Island Democrats in 2010. Simon also worked on John Kerry’s presidential election campaign in 2004.

Whitehouse has a big financial advantage as he prepares to square off in November against Republican businessman Barry Hinckley.
