Langevin among reps rapping Bachmann in Muslim Brotherhood controversy

July 25, 2012

Tea Party favorite Michele Bachmann and some other GOP members of the House Intelligence Committee are facing criticism from their colleagues, including Jim Langevin, for asserting the Muslim Brotherhood may be making inroads into the US government.

The Huffington Post cover the issue today:

Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), Thomas Rooney (R-Fla.) and Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.) recently wrote letters to the inspectors general at five federal agencies asking them to investigate the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood. Their most high-profile target was Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They alleged that Abedin may have ties to the Brotherhood through her family.

Langevin is quoted in the story. Here’s his full statement on the issue, as provided by his office:

“It’s reprehensible for any Member of Congress to level these kinds of serious accusations without the facts to back them up. I was particularly appalled to see the singling out of Ms. Abedin, who I have had the pleasure to know and represents the type of honorable person we should want at the highest levels of public service. Given our access to sensitive information, I also believe members of the Intelligence Committee have a special responsibility to exercise caution in making statements about national security concerns. The only reasonable action for the authors of these letters to take would be to withdraw their requests.”

ah….I love it when I can feel proud of Rhode Island and our politicians. Thank you truly, Mr. Langevin. I feel proud today and so very grateful you’re in office.
