Medina charged with unauthorized practice of law

August 14, 2012

State Representative Leo Medina, a Providence Democrat, is being formally charged on previous accusations of practicing law without a license. A Supreme Court committee last year referred the case to the attorney general’s office for investigation.

This from the AG’s office:

At the request of the Rhode Island Supreme Court and its Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, the Office of Attorney General and the Rhode Island State Police conducted an investigation into allegations of the unauthorized practice of law by Leonidas Medina (DOB: 3/29/64), with a last known address of 271 Washington Avenue, Providence.  Today, Attorney General Kilmartin and Colonel Steven G. O’Donnell announced that the investigation has resulted in charging Medina with eight counts of unauthorized practice of law under R.I.G.L. 11-27.

The state alleges that Medina held himself out as an attorney through advertising; received fees for services performed by an attorney; provided legal advice and counseling pertaining to judicial proceedings; and received fees to procure legal services for an individual.

Medina is scheduled to be arraigned in Providence District Court this morning.  The maximum penalty for any person violating any of the provisions of this chapter shall, upon a first conviction, be imprisoned for a term not exceeding one year, or fined not exceeding $500.

In an unrelated matter, Medina was arraigned in March 2012 on charges of embezzlement over $100, obtaining money under false pretenses over $500, and unlawful appropriation over $1,000. A pre-trial conference date on that matter is scheduled for September 6, 2012.

Medina is being challenged by the man he defeated in 2010, former state Rep. Joseph Almeida.
