Watch the video — Carcieri talks 38 Studios on Channel 12

Former Governor Don Carcieri defends himself in his first interview since the meltdown of 38 Studios, taking responsibility for approving the deal, but questioning the followup after he left office.

The project became a signature for Carcieri toward the end of his two terms in office. Former state Economic Development Corporation director Saul Kaplan has described how he struggled to get legislative support for a much smaller business-loan package than the $125 million deal that helped attract 38 Studios.

So the ex-Gov says he was only one vote out of 12 (wink, wink) to approve the deal, that a big part of the approval was based on 38 Studios having successfully released its first game (without mentioning that the game was acquired, not developed by 38), that EDC got expert advice before approving but in retrospect (?) 38 wasn’t adequately financed, and that he would have considered giving 38 more time or more state money when trouble came to light. Satisfactory explanations?
