Cicilline likened to Lazarus; Cook Political Report moves RI CD1 to “Lean D”
More good news for Democratic Congressman David Cicilline, even after a better than expected debate performance this week by Republican opponent Brendan Doherty: The respected Cook Political Report in Washington, DC, has moved the RI CD1 race from “Toss up” to “Lean D.”
Here’s the accompanying text from Cook:
Like Lazarus, Cicilline appears to have risen from the ranks of the political dead to take a small lead against former Rhode Island Police Superintendent Brendan Doherty, in no small part thanks to the overwhelmingly Democratic nature of this Providence district. Rhode Island insiders say unstable Democratic businessman Anthony Gemma’s primary challenge actually helped Cicilline by allowing the incumbent to claim some vindication after he beat back the attacks Gemma had hurled at his mayoral record. It’s still not over, but Republican strategists are increasingly pessimistic.
Meanwhile, Doherty and Cicilline are set to meet in another debate, next Tuesday, on ABC6. I’ll be on the panel for that one.
Polls show a tight race between the two candidates with less than three weeks to go until Election Day.
Meanwhile, Cicilline offered this message in an email to supporters today:
This week, I need to raise $40,000 in order to meet my goals and keep my ads up on television. I hope you will consider helping me by making a contribution. If I find 40 people to give $1000, I reach my goal; or 80 to give $500 or 120 to give… well you get the idea.
