Post-Thanksgiving Good Deed: Buy Nothing Coat Exchange

November 21, 2012

Sso you’ve gorged on the Turkey, the stuffing, the yams, the squash and all cranberry relish your stomach can process. Maybe you had some wine and watched enough football to slouch into a deep snooze on the couch. Hopefully you had a great Thanksgiving and avoided family psycho-drama or severe bloating from all that good food.

So on Friday, you’ll want to do some good for your fellow Rhode Islanders who perhaps have less to be thankful for than you and yours. For a good deed, there is the 16th annual Buy Nothing Day Winter Coat Exchange.

This event was started by environmental and political activist Gregg Gerritt, who is still with it after all these years. From modest beginnings, the coat exchange has now expanded to nine locations across the Ocean State. The beauty is in the simplicity: those who have old coats in the back of their closets that they are not using drop them off. Folks who need coats pick them up.

The original location, on the South Lawn at the State House, in the shadow of the Providence Place Mall, is still in use. Volunteers from the coat exchange will be on the scene from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to collect coats, hang them on racks and distribute them to needy people who need coats before the winter really sets in. In addition, there are eight other locations this for the coat exchange – the most ever says Gerritt.

Among the other locations:

Pawtucket: 175 Main St., The Blackstone Valley Visitors Center.

Newport: 12 West Marlborough St. St. Paul’s United Methodist Church

Wakefield: 114 High St., St. Francis Church

East Providence: 610 Waterman Ave., Breed Hall

Bristol: 1 Constitution St. Bristol Elks Lodge

Cranston: 1225 Park Ave. Cranston YMCA

Warwick: 900 Centreville Rd., Kent County YMCA

North Kingstown: 7540  Post Rd.,  West Bay Family YMCA
